I hate school papers…well enough of that, and after the last one I think was a little unintentionally preachy, I think its time we move on from the Disney Renaissance and into the post-renaissance with their hits and misses. In this case, the one movie ma many people say had led to the downfall of 2D animation or not, Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
This is definitely one of those films that either people really like or really hate (seriously people, find some balance) And for me, I enjoy the film, flawed yes but no reason to dismiss it. I think part of the problem why many people dismiss it is because is because of what I talked about before that it doesn’t have the predictable Disney formula that people love to criticize. But unlike missteps like The Black Cauldron, this film does make up for it with the mythology, the action, the style by the creator of HellBoy Mike Mignola, and for me, the side characters: Vinny, Mole, Audrey, Dr. Sweet etc. is what makes this film a pass for me.
So most of you by now who read this should be pretty familiar with the film so I’m not going to go too much into detail. But the film is basically about how Milo Thatch teams up with a team to discover the ruins of Atlantis since Milo is an expert in its language. And after various dangers, they get there, find’s love with Princess Kida, and then a plot is revealed about how its all just a treasure hunt to the villain Rourke to get the crystal, even though at it would mean the death of Atlantis. And the race is on to save the lost empire and preserve a lost legacy. One thing I will admit that I REALLY didn’t like about the film is the plot twist at the beginning of the 3rd act when Rourke reveals himself to be the bad guy, and it is all about GREED. I agree with Doug Walker on this about the stupidity on that level, he’s gonna get rich anyway for discovering a lost city, WHY take the crystal only and destroy the city!? I can describe Rourke that way with 3 words, he’s a lazy dickish dumbass!
But as I said, despite its flaws, I still think its fun. So with that said, how can the movie work for Kingdom Hearts? Well already the Atlantis Empire itself does hold a lot of promise to be an actual world, it can work too say that after recovering from being destroyed by the Heartless during the times of Ansem, Seeker of Darkness before his defeat in KH1. And even though the world has been restored, the culture and people are still struggling and the heartless that are still around can seriously pose as a threat to their survival. What about the theme of exploration? Well it can work in either 2 ways. KH3 could have it where Sora, Donald and Goofy are the only explorers, as Kida would assist them, as she believes they could be of help to saving her home. Or go the ways of the movie, as several explorers, especially Milo, Rourke and Helga, would be there in the world, as Rourke unleashes his plans to take away the crystal, the actual “heart” of that world. So Sora would be struggling to save the heart of the world from 2 threats. Rourke who wants to steal it for profit, and the heartless that wants to destroy it and send the world to darkness.
A lot of potential there huh? How about gameplay wise? Well aside from the story, I can actually see some heartless based on the Atlantian myth, which is a cool idea. I can see Rourke as a boss, though I think on the same level of those like Shan Yu. But given his motive, I can honestly picture him being turned into crystal like in the film, but more heartless like as his greed and arrogance opens his heart to darkness and makes him more powerful than he was already, and not easily as breakable. Party member? Well depending on how they construct the plot, I think that honour can go to Kida herself. Not sure how they could use Milo since he’s more of a linguist and not a fighter. But for my money’s worth, Kida can work as a feral fighter in the same way as Tarzan from the first game. And…for you guys reading this, how could you not want Cree Summers by your side in the game? XD.
…AND with that memory brought back, so many childhoods are destroyed, I am so sorry . Well either way, despite the poor performance and split praise, I honestly think that Atlantis deserves to be risen up as a world for Kingdom Hearts III!
